Urban users of Bell Mobility GSM / HSPA+ phones find Black Holes (in service areas)!
It sucks, to buy a new cell phone and not be able to use it anywhere you want.
This is a problem that many new users of Bell Mobility’s GSM (HSPA+) phones are currently experiencing. Although most users of Bell’s GSM phones (like the iPhone) get superb service in their home service areas, many users lose their service when they leave their local area.
Why?
The problem is due to the fact that Bell has rolled our their HSPA+ network to urban areas, leaving entire provinces like Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the dark. (We reported this in our last article).
But recently I have been receiving more general outages (what I call black holes) from urban users who are losing cellular service on their Bell GSM phones in areas where cellular service is expected. For example, in the Greater Toronto Area, your HSPA+ will work until you pass King City (20 minutes North of the city).
We expect Bell to increase their HSPA+/GSM network coverage over the next year but in the mean time you may suddenly find yourself without service.
Help others… Take a Small Action!
Are you currently using Bell Mobility’s new HSPA+ network and have noticed dead zones in areas around you? Please share your dead zones with us and other Bell GSM users…
Simply complete the form at the bottom of this page and tell us where you have no service.
And if you liked this article you can find more articles and videos for Bell Mobility users at http://cellarama.com/articles/ – At Cellarama.com you’ll also find great contract-free Bell cell phones.

Toronto, Upper Beaches. Can’t make a call from my home without it dropping. That’s if it has any tiny shred of a signal and lets me make the call in the first place.

The real problem is that Bell doesn’t actually have a GSM network they only have a UMTS network (HSPA is just data on UMTS). This wouldn’t be a problem if their UMTS network had been built ionizer the years like Rogers GSM network. Instead, Bell had made the decision to use WCDMA and since that’s not compatible with UMTS, new users can only use the smaller, newer network. If you’re on Rogers, at least when you lose UMTS, you can still use their GSM network.

Sadly my new Samsung Ace “Smartphone” doesn’t even work in my own house! and a lot of other parts of the Aldershot Burlington,Ont. area where I live. Guess I’ll be going over to Rogers which is what another member of my household has and he has great service even in the basement. Bye bye Bell.

@Heather – Thanks for the post
We are sorry to learn about your service issues… Have you tried using the Rogers SIM in the Samsung Ace? This quick check will let you know if the Rogers network offers better service with the same device. Hope this helps!
