While cell phones have simplified and aided us in our day to day lives, there is one area in which they have fallen short, and that is in how 911 are handled. As a result not only have rescue workers been weighed down attempting to find the cell phone user, but in some cases it has actually resulted in death. All would agree including Bell and other cellular providers that that is simply tragic. The regulators have stepped up and now Bell and other providers have one year to fix 911 service problems.
Since Federal regulators have given cell phone providers in Canada a deadline 911 services are going to start to see upgrades occurring soon. Rescue workers are relieved because the fear of loosing a life because of a delayed response is very real, and so these changes are designed to eliminate the current problems.
In a statement the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission it was stated that the enhanced 911 services would enable emergency responders to be able to incorporate wireless location technology like GPS to locate the caller with a 10 to 300 meter radius.
There are more than 20 million wireless subscribers across Canada so it makes sense that this issue need to be dealt with sooner rather than later. It is critical that emergency responders are able to quickly find the location of the caller. Just minutes can mean the difference between life and death.
It was time for the industry to step up and find a solution to this technical glitch. Since there is nothing that is standing in the way of implementing these new 911 enhanced features the first steps are sure to occur shortly.
These changes involve Bell and other cell providers. Many consumers have turned to a cell phone as their only phone, however others have held off because of issues such as the 911 problems which had many worrying they wouldn’t get the help they needed fast enough in an emergency. Now you can relax and know that whether you are using a Bell cell phone or a Bell land line it won’t matter because the new enhancements will significantly improve the 911 service for all cellular users in Canada.
