Why You Must Sign Up Now for Canada’s National Do Not Call List

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Now more than ever, you need to sign up for the DNCL, Canada’s National Do Not Call List. Keep reading to find out why!

Here’s the scenario: You’re sitting around the dinner table with your family and the phone rings. You’re wondering: Who’s calling me at dinnertime? Chances are, however, you already suspect the call is from a telemarketing company. Next you wonder: How did they get my phone number?

If you’re concerned about how telemarketers get your phone number, you have more reason than ever to be worried. For the first time ever, the Canadian government is selling your personal contact information, including your phone numbers, to interested marketing firms. Previously, when marketers wanted to contact you, they would buy or rent a list of information from a company that collected information on you. This list would include details such as what city or town you live in and your postal code. The good thing was that these lists typically did not contain a complete set of information.

Things have changed. Marketers no longer look to third-party list brokers for your contact information. They don’t have to! The government of Canada will gladly sell them a complete set of your information. That’s right!  The Canadian government is now in the business of selling your information! And, unlike the previous lists, the information that is now sold is even more complete. That means that, for the first time ever, thanks to the government, telemarketing companies now have access to your cell phone number.

Worried? Here’s the solution.

Step 1: Register both your landline number and cell phone number to the DNCL! It’s the only way to prevent your information from being shared. What’s more, unless you sign up for Canada’s DNCL, your contact information will automatically be included in the information that’s sold to telemarketers. If you don’t want your information shared, you need to take action and sign up for the DNCL. This will protect you from Canadian marketing firms with agents calling from within Canada.

Step 2: For more complete protection, submit both your landline number and cell phone number to the Do Not Call Registry in the United States. This will shield you from calls from American firms.
Be warned, though! Registering for Canada’s DNCL will not eliminate all telemarketing calls. Even after you’ve registered, the government allows the following organizations to still call your numbers:

• Canadian registered charities
• Political parties
• Newspapers (for subscriptions)
• Firms you have existing relationships with
• Companies you have recently purchased goods from
• Market research firms

And if you own a business, you’re out of luck. DNCL rules do not apply to telemarketing calls made to businesses.

You can protect your personal information by acting now. For instructions on how to sign up for the DNCL, please view our first video called “Stop Telemarketers with DNCL”.

Why You Need a Contract-Free Bell Cell Phone

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Was your Bell cell phone lost or stolen?  Or through regular use, was it broken?

If you’re thinking about getting your replacement phone through Bell, here’s the problem: Bell cannot offer you a discount on a replacement Bell phone while you’re in a contract. Instead, you’ll have to pay full price for phones that typically start at $200. If you wait until you have the money, you won’t have a phone to use but you will have a bill to pay. Yes, you’re obligated to pay your monthly Bell bill even if you don’t have a working phone.

Here’s the solution: Buy a contract-free Bell cell phone. If you need a phone to add to your existing Bell account, a contract-free phone can be programmed with your existing number without changing your plan or contract. You can also use a contract-free phone to activate a brand new Bell Mobility account.

Before you decide, though, consider the options. Here are three ways you can purchase your phone and some thoughts about each.

Buying directly from Bell Mobility:

- Advantages: You’ll have a wide variety of options to choose from. Also, phones from Bell are often brand new and come with a Bell warranty.

- Disadvantages: You’ll pay a lot more. Even Bell Mobility’s most basic contract-free phones start at $200.

Higher-end phones come with much higher prices.

Buying from classified websites such as Kijiji, Craigslist, or eBay®:

- Advantages: You can get a good price. You can buy without a contract. And you may find a wide selection of handsets available.

- Disadvantages: You’re taking a chance on the quality of the phone and even on whether it works. With no warranty, you’ll have little recourse when your phone stops working. Do your homework before buying a phone from a classified site. And consider picking up the phone in person (in a public place), to reduce the chances of fraud.

Buying from Cellarama.com, an online store dedicated to selling contract-free Bell Mobility cell phones:

- Advantages: You’re buying from a trusted Bell resource. All phones are sold with a warranty and refund period and are guaranteed to work. You’ll have all the upsides of buying directly from Bell at a lower cost.

Cellarama phones typically start at around $60 compared to Bell’s $200. And Cellarama has a proven track record. Now five years old, Cellarama has sold thousands of contract-free Bell phones to satisfied Bell customers.

- Disadvantages: You have a smaller range of phones to choose from. But here’s an idea: Purchase a phone from Cellarama to get you to the end of your current Bell contract then negotiate with Bell for a free phone and features when you’re ready to start your next 36-month contract.
Regardless of which option you choose, purchasing a contract-free phone from Bell Mobility is a great way to go if you need a replacement phone for your existing Bell account or want to start a new account or line with Bell.

Activate Your Bell Cell Phone Yourself - No Store! No Fee!

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

One problem faced by many Bell Mobility users is that they have to go into a Bell Mobility store to activate their phone. This may not be too inconvenient if you live near to a Bell Mobility store but many people do not live near to a Bell store or need to activate their phone outside of store hours like on Sunday’s or holidays. And did I mention the instore activation charge of between $15 - $25?

This short video will hold you by the hand and show step-by-step how to active your new or used Bell Mobility cell phone from the comfort of your own home using the Bell.ca website.

This guide is for if you already have an existing account with Bell Mobility and would like to add a new phone to your existing account. If you do not already have a Bell Mobility account then you’ve got to go into a Bell store to have one created. With that said…

Sit back and let me show you the steps you need to take to activate your new Bell phone.

1.First visit the Bell website on our computer by entering www.bell.ca into your internet browser.

2.At the very top right hand corner of the page you will find the “Log in” link, click it.

3.In the form that opens, enter your Bell.ca username and then your Password, and then select the “Log in” button below.

4.If you don’t have a username and password for Bell.ca you can easily get one by speaking to a Bell Mobility customer service representative at 1-800-667-0123. They can show you how to access and add your Bell Mobility account to your Bell.ca profile. Besiding alowing you activate your Bell cell phone, the Bell.ca site allows you to view important information regarding your service including your reviewing your Bill, and most important to me, allowing me to see how many airtime minutes I have used up for the month.

5.Once you’ve logged in you will be taken to the “My Bell” page. Here you can view your bill, see your other Bell services, and update your user profile. On this page locate the “My services” section and below it you should see your “Wireless” service and the mobile phone numbers that are on your account. If you have more than one cell phone on your Bell Mobility account use the drop-down box to select the phone number that you want to put on your new phone. It is very important that you select the correct phone number. If you select the wrong phone then you can interupt service to it. You don’t have to worry about this if you only have one phone on your account.

Once you have selected the phone number you want to activate click on the little circle with the arrow button beside the number.

6.The next page that you will be taken to is called the “My Wirelss services” page. On this page you can add new features to the Bell phone you selected, you can reset your voice mail password, and you can even change your phone number too.

Locate and click on the “Change my phone” text link, it is found under the “Features and Services” column.

7.Once on the “Change my phone” page read the short instructions and then enter your cell phone’s 11 digit ESN (Electronic Serial Number) also sometimes called the MEID (Mobile Equipment Identity) into the 2 blank fields near the bottom of the page. Enter the same number into both fields. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the “continue” button.

The ESN is typcially an 11 digit number found on a sticker located on your phone often hidden by the cell phone battery. Every Bell cell phone has a unique ESN this is how Bell is able to identify one phone from another.

If you phone is ever lost or stolen contact Bell and they will add your ESN to their “negative file” making it imposible for anyone to use your phone.

Be aware that some newer phones have ESN numbers that are longer that 11 digits.

8.If you are taken to the “Change my phone” page with the words “Contract term” then Bell has accepted the ESN that you entered and you are ready to complete the activation. If you got an error then your serial number may not be good, you may not be able to activate that phone. In this situation you should contact Bell Mobility customer service and ask them to verify that the ESN is good.

Once you see the “Contract term” phrase you are ready to complete the activation. On this page Bell gives you the opportunity to change your rate plan (I recommend that you don’t) and you can also extend your term (I also recommend that you don’t). You want to keep everything the same. You can change these things later.

Locate the button that reads “Keep current” and click it.

9.The next page that will load is a page that allows you to add and remove features like call display, text messaging, and others to your cell phone account. Once again I recommend that you keep everything the same.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the “Continue” button.

10.Great. You are almost finished activing your new bell phone. This next page is a summary page that details the changes that you’ve made. Nothing has been saved as of yet, meaning that if you stopped here or closed your browser there would be no changes made to your account.

In the Summary you will see the new ESN, this is the one that you will be adding, and you will see the existing ESN that is on your account. You will also see the charges associated with activating your new ESN, as there are currently no charges for activating your new phone online you will see $0.00 charged.

At the bottom of this page you will find the “Terms and conditions”, you must read and accept the terms and conditions before you can continue. Start by clicking on the link that reads “Terms and Conditions”, a popup window will appear (if you have popup’s blocked on your browser you may need to disable it for this step). Once the popup with Bell’s terms and conditions is open, scroll to the bottom of the popup window and then close the popup.

Once this is completed you can add a check mark beside “Accept” option and now you can click on the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page.

11.Congratulations, you have just activated your first phone using the Bell.ca website. Bell will often state that these changes can take upto 4hours to take effect on their system, but my personal activations have all been completed within 5 minutes.

This last page is one of the most important pages in the activation process. It tells you have your activation has been completed successfully but you still have one more step to do before your phone will work.

This last step is “Programming your phone”. This is the process of putting your existing phone number into your newly activated phone.

On this page there is one last number that you must copy down. It is Lock Code. The lock code is a 6 digit number that will allow you to access your phone’s programming menu. This is where you will enter your existing phone number. I highly encourage that you write down your lock code and put it up in a safe place because it will not be provided to you again by Bell.ca

12.To finish the activation process you’ll need to program your phone number into your newly activated Bell phone.  You can find programming instructions for many Bell cell phones at this link:  http://cellarama.com/activate - You can contact Bell’s customer service and they should be able to walk you through the steps of programming your phone.

We are in the process of creating video tutorials similar to this one showing your how to program your specific Bell phone.  For programming instructions for your Bell phone visit: http://cellarama.com/activate

Stop Telemarketers with National Do Not Call List

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Whenever I would call my dad at home he’d hardly ever answer. This was because his phone would ring off the hook all day. The caller ID would often read, “Unavailable.” Telemarketers would harass the poor guy all day. You would think buying a cell phone would be the best option, wouldn’t you? Guess again ? telemarketers have reached the cellular world too. The good news is that there is a “National Do Not Call List” that tells these intrusive callers you are just not interested.

Canadian companies calling consumers or hiring another company to call on their behalf must conform to the rules of the National DNCL. Violations could cost these companies up to $15,000 per violation. An individual telemarketer could have penalties of up to $1,500 per violation. Unfortunately non-Canadian companies calling from, or hiring someone else to call from outside Canada don’t have to subscribe to the National DNCL. The rules only apply to Canadian companies.

The number to the National DNCL is 1-866-580-DNCL (3625). The number for fax registration instructions is 1-888-DNCL-FAX (362-5329). To call by TTY: 1-888-DNCL-TTY (362-5889). You can, of course, register online at the National DNCL site: www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca. Your number remains on the list for a total of 5 years. For the best protection also add yourself to the Unites States’ Federal Trade Commission’s Do Not Call Registry by calling 888-382-1222. Be aware that you can only register the number you are faxing or calling from.

You can always deregister your number and you can also allow certain telemarketers to call you. Permission can be granted verbally, via a written form, electronic form, or online.

Telemarketing companies or individuals can use the site to register their company’s information and pay for a subscription to an updated list of numbers not to call. Seeing the potential fines, I would think the modest price for a subscription is far better than the hefty penalties.

So once you have registered your number and you get a call, be sure to get information from the company calling you.

Now we just have to find a way to block all phone calls coming up as “Unavailable.”

5 Things You Must Check Before Buying A Used Bell Cell Phone on Classified Sites

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

You can find replacement or used Bell Mobility cell phones at many locations online including the many classified ad sites.  This article will discuss why you must be very careful using classified ad sites to find your next used Bell Mobility cell phone. Also you will find a list of 5 things you can do to increase your chances of finding a good deal.

If you’re thinking of buying a phone through a classified website such as kijijiTM, craigslist, or eBay®, be forewarned. Despite the “good deal” you might think you’re getting, there are dangers to watch out for. Here are some of them:

• Many phones are sold by people you shouldn’t put your trust in.

• Most phones do not come with warranties or guarantees or even the option to return them for a refund.

• Most phones are sold “as is” and on “final sale”. You take what you get.

• When your phone arrives, you may find it has signal reception problems, bad batteries, or missing accessories. In addition, it may be a stolen phone or there may be hygiene issues to deal with.

• Once you send your money, you may be out of luck if the phone doesn’t work as promised. Even if you’re careful and do your research before you buy, you may have little recourse when the phone doesn’t work.

If you do find a Bell cell phone you like on a classified site, though, consider picking it up from the seller in person. If you can arrange for a safe exchange—in a public place with other people around—meeting the seller in person reduces the potential for fraud.

Once you receive your phone, look it over it carefully while the seller is there. And make sure you take these steps:

• Inspect the phone to determine what kind of condition it’s in. Make sure it matches the description you were given.

• Test all the buttons, keys, and trackballs or trackwheels to ensure they work properly and are not loose.

• Make a test call. For Bell phones, dial *611 or *2355. If the phone works, you will reach the Bell automated reply. While on the Bell test call, test the speakerphone functionality.

• Test features such as the camera and video.

• Make sure it can be activated with Bell.  Before you buy, get the 11-digit ESN number of the phone and contact Bell Mobility. Bell can confirm that the phone you are buying is actually a Bell phone, and if the phone has been reported lost or stolen.  This will save you from possible activation problems later.

But before you buy, consider the best idea of all. Don’t get your phone from a classified site. Get it from Cellarama!

At Cellarama.com, you can purchase a contract-free cell phone for the Bell network that’s new, used, or refurbished. There are Contract-free Bell phones can be used on your existing Bell Mobility account without changing your plan or adding a contract. In addition, you can activate these phones on a brand new account. Every phone is cleared by Bell, ensuring you the easiest and fastest activation process.  And Cellarama phones come with a warranty, a return policy and are guaranteed to work.

Buy your contract-free replacement phone from Cellarama. It’s guaranteed. No hassles, no trust issues, no worries.

Which Phones Will Work On Bell Mobility? The Top 4 Ways To Identify a Bell Cell Phone

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Are you curious if a certain phone will work on Bell Mobility?  In this short article, you will learn why it is important to know if a phone will work on Bell before you purchase it.  You will also learn how to identify a Bell phone.

Unlike other Canadian cellular carriers like Rogers and Fido, Bell Mobility will not allow any phone to be activated on their network.  Bell Mobility only activates phones that are originally purchased by Bell from the manufacturer.  How does Bell accomplish this?  I’m glad you asked… Every CDMA cell phone comes with an ESN (electronic serial number), this number uniquely identifies every phone produced by the manufacturer.

When Bell purchases new phones they store each individual ESN to a database called the ESN Database, and whenever someone takes a phone to Bell to be activated, Bell checks their ESN Database to make sure the ESN is in there.  If your phone’s ESN does not have a matching ESN in Bell’s database, your phone will not be activated.

Cell phone manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola and others rarely make a cell phone model for a specific mobile carrier, so the same phone model can be found on many different mobile carriers.  Often Bell will sell the same phone models as Sprint and Verizon in the US.  But even identical cell phone models sold by Sprint and Verizon will cannot be activated by Bell.   When looking for replacement Bell Mobility cell phone (new, used, or refurbished) it is important to know that the phone you are considering is indeed a Bell phone.

Here are the top 4 ways to identify a Bell cellular phone:

  1. Bell spends money to brand their phones.  Most phones will have a Bell logo stamped somewhere on the phone’s housing.  If you find the Bell logo on a cellular phone, there is a very good chance that the phone is a Bell phone.
  2. The second way to identify a Bell Mobility cell phone is in the start-up software.  Just like when you turn on your PC, you will see the Microsoft logo on your monitor during the computer start-up most Bell phones will display the Bell logo during the phone’s start-up.
  3. Another way to know if your phone is a Bell phone is to see if the phone you are interested in is on the list of phones that Bell has released.  This is an effective way to eliminate phones that cannot be activated on Bell Mobility because if a certain model was not released by Bell, then there is almost no way that the phone is from Bell.  For example, up until the date this article was written Bell has never released a phone by manufacturer Sony-Ericsson, so any Sony-Ericsson phone is definitely not a Bell unit.  This list is extensive and is accurate through the time this article is written.
  4. The most effective way to determine if the phone you are considering is a Bell phone and can be activated on the Bell network is to locate the ESN, or ask the seller for the electronic serial number on the phone.  Then contact your local Bell store (or Bell Mobility Customer Service), give the representative the ESN, and they can let you know if the phone can be activated.

Follow these simple instructions and you can be sure that the cellular phone you are considering is actually a Bell cellular phone and can be activated by Bell Mobility.
