Doing It All Yourself (Starter Guide): Activating and Programming Your Bell Phone

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Why You Should Activate and Program Your Own Phone

Activating and programming your Bell phone yourself is convenient. Doing it yourself saves you the hassle of driving to the nearest Bell store. It’s nice to save a little time. And, since time is money, you get to save a little money, too.

Once you learn how to activate and program your own phone, you’ll realize just how easy it is. Besides, won’t it be cool when you tell everyone that you activated and programmed your own Bell cell phone? In fact, if you’re looking to score a few points, you could offer to activate and program a friend’s phone. So let’s get started.

What You Need to Know

Often, activating and programming become confused. So let’s a get a better understanding of each and what you need to know about both before we go any further.

Activating Your New Bell Cell Phone

Every Bell cell phone has a unique serial number that identifies it on the Bell Mobility cellular network.  Activating your phone links your cell phone’s serial number to your existing Bell Mobility account.

If you are following the instructions given here, it works best if you activate your cell phone first, then program it. This is because after you have activated your phone using the bell.ca website, you’re given the lock code that will allow you to program your phone.

Programming Your New Bell Cell Phone

When you get your new Bell cell phone, either it will be programmed with a dummy (fake) phone number (when it’s a new phone) or it will have the previous owner’s number in it. In both situations, you will need to program your existing Bell phone number into your phone, in order for it to work. When you program your new Bell phone, you replace the existing phone number on the phone with your own. Unless you replace the old phone number with your own, you will never successfully make or receive calls on your phone.

To Begin, You Will Need:

A bell.ca account – Part of the process of activating your Bell phone requires you to have a bell.ca account. If you don’t have one, a Bell customer service representative will help you set one up.

An existing Bell monthly account – Activating your phone yourself only works if you have an existing Bell monthly account. It does not work with Prepaid. If you don’t yet have an account with Bell and need to set one up, you will need to visit your local Bell store.

The lock code – This is the six-digit code you are given when you activate your new cell phone. Think of it as a key for your phone. It gives you access to all of the internal setting and functions of your phone. Write down the lock code and keep it in a safe place. You’ll need it in the future, when you make changes to your cell phone’s programming.

What’s the Process?

Great! Now you’re ready to get busy. You should begin with our Activating Your Phone tutorial video. Then identify your phone model and follow the steps in the Program Your Phone video.

We have an excellent selection of detailed videos that walk you through the activation and programming processes. You can watch them once or as many times as you need. Don’t worry; they were designed with the ordinary user in mind. There’s no need to have any technical background.

So relax! And get your new Bell cell phone activated and programmed in less time than it would take to drive to the Bell store.

Click here to watch the Bell.ca activation video.
