As we move into a world of touchscreen computers, RIM needs to transition to it as well, or risk becoming irrelevant. This is the main reason why last year they acquired an operating system called QNX, so they can port it to their Blackberries, and also enter new markets such as the tablet market. This is how the Playbook was born.

When RIM announced the Blackberry Playbook last fall, they managed to create a lot of excitement from what you’d consider early adopters of gadgets. That is because they managed to surprise everyone that they can actually build a product that for once is on par with, or even exceeds, the technology of their competitors. The QNX team is surely to “blame” here, because I don’t think RIM had that kind of DNA in their company anymore. The QNX team managed to make not just one high-quality tablet, but one with a superb OS, too, much like webOS, but with even better multi-tasking capabilities.

The technology under the hood is comprised of a dual core 1 Ghz OMAP 4430 chip, which runs Flash very well. It has a very high quality 7″ IPS display with a 1024×600 resolution. It’s one of the best in the market and can easily rival the display of the iPad. The tablet can shoot pictures at 5 MP and record 1080p videos, and also has a front camera for video calls, that can shoot pictures at 3MP as well. It has 1 GB of RAM, which goes well with the QNX’ multi-tasking, because the more apps you’ll be using in the same time, or the more web pages you keep running, the more RAM you’ll need. You also get 16 GB of storage with the cheapest model, and up to 64 GB with the most expensive one.

On the software side, the QNX, has a great user interface that is very intuitive and easy to pick up as you play with it. You just have to flick the frames of the active apps to switch between them, and the other apps are well organized. Everything runs well and smoothly.

If you want a 7″ tablet, the Bell Blackberry Playbook is one of the best out there, and you should at least take a look at it before you decide on buying a tablet. Its main competitor would be the 7″ Bell Galaxy Tab, which does have a lot more apps than the Bell Blackberry Playbook, but if you’re mainly getting it for browsing the web, then the Bell Blackberry Playbook is much better because it has a processor that is twice as fast, and thus it can load the webpages much faster. You can take a look at the Bell Blackberry Playbook on Bell’s site, and you can get the 16 GB version for $499.95.

The Bell Blackberry Bold 9780 is yet another Blackberry phone to feature Blackberry OS 6.0 on a classic Blackberry style body. Let’s see how well it performs and what’s underneath.

Because it’s a more traditional looking Blackberry smartphone I expect it to become quite popular with old Blackberry fans, including enterprise customers, who may not be too fond of the slide-out keyboard on the Torch 9800.

The Bell Blackberry Bold 9780 phone actually has almost the same features as the Torch. It comes with a 624 Mhz CPU, a 480×360 display, that’s quite a bit smaller, at 2.44″, because it has to have both the screen and the keyboard on the same phone surface. It has 512 MB of RAM – same as torch, and only 256 MB of internal storage, but it should be enough for your most important applications. The camera is identical to the Torch’s camera, and can take 5 MP pictures.

Bell Blackberry Torch 9800 was highly expected by Blackberry fans who wanted the best of both world from this new Blackberry phone – the well known quality keyboard, and a touchscreen and a more optimized OS to be suited for the new world of modern smartphones we live in.

The Bell Blackberry Torch is definitely a Blackberry signature phone, but with a touchscreen and the new Blackberry 6.0 OS, which brings a vastly improved browser, keeping it in line with mobile operating systems such as iOS and Android. So how does the phone look and feel?

As I said above, it looks like most Blackberry phones out there, but it has a slide out keyboard, and the phone’s body is very polished and well built. It’s a bit thick, at 14.6mm, compared to iPhone 4 at  8.9 mm and most new Android phones that are under 10 mm. But this is to be expected from a phone that has a keyboard underneath, which also makes it feel a bit heavier than you might expect.

The touchscreen display is 3.2″ in size (decent), has 16 million colors and a 480×360 resolution, so it looks pretty good, although it could’ve been better. It comes with a 624 Mhz CPU, which is actually quite low for today’s smartphones, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work well enough with your browser and apps. The problem is that today you can get phones that are several times faster for about the same price (unlocked) or  bit more. RIM needs to stay competitive in brining high-tech chips to their phones, if they don’t want to lose the consumer market for good. The camera is pretty good for taking pictures at 5 MP, although the video recording is lacking, with its VGA recording resolution at 24FPS.

The Blackberry OS 6.0 software brings a lot of improvements, most being related to the interface and the browser (totally revamped). Of course there is still the problem with the lack of apps, but if you didn’t care much about apps before, then you won’t now either. If you’re a current Blackberry user and you want to stay loyal to Blackberry, this is the best Blackberry phone so far. You can get it at Bell’s site on sale at $99.

They also come with 1.2 Ghz processors and 768 MB of RAM, and this basically makes the 2 phones the fastest phones RIM has ever released.

Granted the phones are still a generation behind competition from Android phones, that are starting to have dual core 1.2 Ghz processors now, but the phones should still perform very well, and if you haven’t switched already to iPhone or Android, and you’re a loyal Blackberry fan then you might want to take a very close look to these phones. Even more so because the phones will come with Blackberry OS 7.0 which will also bring a slew of improvements, such as separating personal from corporate data, and an upgraded browser with HTML5 video support.

At least one of these phones, the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 or the 9930, will become available to Bell Mobility this summer. Unfortunately, there’s no news on pricing so you’ll have to wait until then to find that out, but I would assume it’s on par with other high-end Blackberry releases like the Blackberry Torch.

The Blackberry Curve line-up was pretty excellent and probably RIM’s best built devices ever, but they are being left behind by more modern phones, that have access not only to a much better browser, but also apps.

Bell Mobility Blackberry Curve 9300 and Blackberry Curve 9700 have just been updated to RIM’s BB OS 6.0, which is a major update to the Blackberry platform.

But why did RIM go to the trouble of updating old phones with their new OS 6.0? I think it’s because they want to lure a lot more developers to their platform. Since OS 6.0 is bringing a ton of improvements to the phones, developers can take advantage of more powerful API’s and build better apps, but developers need a large market to deploy their apps, and if BB OS 6.0 is not on as many phones as possible, then their revenue potential is much smaller.

RIM realized that developers are very important in this new smartphone world, and in fact there are even rumors that RIM is testing Android apps for these Curves. These means that even if BB OS is not appealing enough for developers, the users will still get access to over 100,000 Android apps.
